Harriers continued pre-season with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against League 1 Bristol Rovers.

Ashley Chambers had Harriers ahead at the break with a well-taken goal, with Tom Nichols notching an equaliser for The Gas at the end.

Harriers began the game the brightest of the two teams, and hit the woodwork inside seven minutes as a well-struck free-kick thumped off the post and away with the goalkeeper beaten.

Williams was in and around much of the action up top – he exchanged passed with Chambers, who hit wide, before cutting inside and firing at goal with an effort that goalkeeper Jakola held.

Rovers kept Harriers alert with a free-kick that was well cleared on 23 minutes, but Chambers remained a threat up at the other end and played in Butterfield five minutes later with Jakola again on hand to deny the Reds.

Chambers opened the scoring with nine to go until the break when Austin’s expert pass released the striker, the former Nuneaton man tucking the ball beyond the keeper and into the back of the net.

Six after the restart Rovers were level when Nichols met a good cross with a strong header from eight yards that beat the goalkeeper. Harriers almost responded immediately, but Jakola stood up strong to block another Chambers effort as he picked up on a Weeks pass.

Butterfield found room on the edge of the area before shooting wide near the hour, the trialist goalkeeper for Harriers producing a great save to deny Nichols a second up at the other end.

One of nine Rovers’ subs with around 20 minutes to go, Reilly, struck wide for the vistors as the half wore on, a cross turned on to the post moments later almost giving them the lead.

With the entire outfield consisting of players to have played, or be playing, in the Harriers Academy, the finish was a tough work-out for the Aggborough youngsters but they showed their own mettle superbly, blocking and tackling their way to a deserved draw.

ED Williams is confident Harriers are well equipped to deal with the ever-demanding challenges set by pre-season as the team meet Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

With a first friendly against a youthful Aston Villa side under their belts, Harriers now face an even sterner test with the visit of League 1 Rovers.

Williams, who netted in the 3-1 win in midweek, knows full well that the Rovers team, packed with experienced EFL players, will provide a tricky afternoon at the office.

He insists, though, that this kind of work-out is every bit as essential to the team’s preparations for the new campaign as the games against the likes of Villa and Wolves.

“It’s good to get both,” Ed said.

“Saturday is going to bring a different challenge and probably a more physical one.

“They’ll be a fit side, so we are all looking forward to it, it’s a quick turnaround.

“Elliot and Josh work tirelessly with our monitors and GPS in terms of our minutes and they make sure we’re getting our fitness in.

“They’ll be a fit side, so we are all looking forward to it..." Ed Williams

“It’s all just geared towards the first game of the season.”

The Villa win got the summer campaign underway in useful style, and the former Gloucester City man was pleased to see how the team’s day-to-day work has already started to show through.

He added: “I was really pleased – we saw a lot of good pictures and, with the things we’re working on in training, it’s always pleasing for them to come out in matches.

“Those are good signs.”

Boss John Pemberton said after Wednesday that Alex Prosser would need to be assessed after picking up a strain in the Villa game.

He’s hopeful, meanwhile, that goalkeeper Tom Palmer and striker Richard Peniket will be able to feature in pre-season shortly.

The two missed the Villa game, largely as a precaution, after picking up knocks in training.

Kick-off at Aggborough on Saturday is at 3:00pm.

Admission for all supporters is cash on the turnstile at £10 adults, £6 concessions and £1 U16s
