Interview: Austin happy with clinical Harriers

SAM AUSTIN was happy to see Harriers find the back of the net at Stourport as he grabbed one of the team’s eight in the pre-season win.

It was the first time the reds had registered this summer – a closed-doors training game at Walsall and home matches against Derby County and Aston Villa yielding nothing in front of goal.

The lively Austin says that the team stuck to their guns and added that clinical edge against the Swifts, the emphatic win seeing Joe Ironside getting four of the goals.

“That was one of the things we needed to improve on, having come out of our games so far and not scored a goal,” explained the youngster.

“We needed it to boost our confidence and we were working hard at the same time, doing the right thing – it worked for us.

“Throughout the games we’ve been getting into those positions, it’s just been about being clinical – we proved we can do that [at Stourport].”

Austin’s afternoon at Walshes Meadow was a varied one.

As well as playing an attacking role he also spent much of the day at full-back – all part and parcel of pre-season, he says.

Working hard

Up next for John Eustace’s first team squad is a home contest with Burnley this coming weekend – the perfect platform for Harriers to keep on improving.

Austin added: “That’s all part of pre-season, working hard and doing that extra running ready for the season.

“That’s all it is, especially as a full back, getting up and down the pitch.

“I feel, from last season, a lot fitter now and for the first two weeks in particular we have worked really hard.

“There are still to things to improve on, but we’ll do that.”
