Recap: Harriers 1-1 Macclesfield

A look back at Saturday’s dramatic late finish…

HARRIERS were forced to make do with a point at home to Macclesfield after a dramatic late leveller squared the match 1-1.

The Reds had been in front thanks to Luke Spokes’ second goal of the season early in the second half but, in the 11th minute of eight added on at the end of the game, the Silkmen snatched a share of the spoils through Danny Elliott.

Chances were scarce in the early stages, though the visitors’ Elliott did get in behind inside the first five minutes only to fire tamely at Christian Dibble.

From a free kick on nine minutes James Edmondson tested Dibble at his near post, the Harriers stopper saving smartly before Sam Heathcote headed the resulting corner over.

At the other end Joe Foulkes went close with a strike from distance that whistled wide, while Pierce Bird also saw an effort blocked after reacting to a ball into the area. Emeka Obi then curled narrowly over before the break.

Adam Murray introduced Reece Devine and David Davis at half time, and Harriers quickly looked the brighter, forging ahead just ten after the restart. Just before the hour, Devine’s cut-back picked out Spokes on the edge of the area and his strike bounced up and over Max Dearnley for the opener.

The hosts looked to extend their advantage, Ryley Reynolds going close with the best opening Harriers had at a second goal – he took a Kai Innocent chance down superbly in the area before shooting and curling just over the bar.

A well-drilled Macclesfield kept themselves in the contest and saw Isaac Buckley-Ricketts fire wide late on, before Harriers looked to have seen off the danger from the awarded eight minutes, only for a further three to be played and more than 100 on the clock come the leveller – Elliott staying lively and alert to reach a ball in the area and tuck it beyond Dibble.

Significant frustration greeted the final whistle but Harriers players and fans can take credit at maintaining a reasonable start to the campaign all told.
