HARRIERS had to settle for a point on the road after a hard-fought goalless draw with Bedford Town on Tuesday night.
It was an end-to-end contest, with Harriers creating enough opportunities to take all three points, but also having to show real resilience in the second half as the hosts threatened to snatch it themselves.
The visitors started brightly and were quick to test Bedford goalkeeper Rohan Luthra. On four minutes, Ryley Reynolds surged forward on the break before squaring for Ashley Hemmings, whose swerving strike was well dealt with by a full-length diving save.
At the other end Bedford saw an effort blocked on 11 minutes, but Harriers immediately broke at pace. George Walker fed Hemmings, who finished smartly, only for the assistant’s flag to cut short the celebrations.
Christian Dibble was called upon on 35 minutes when Tyrone Marsh attempted a delicate chip from 18 yards, but the Harriers goalkeeper read it well and gathered calmly. Harriers responded four minutes later as Emeka Obi met a Reynolds free kick with real conviction, his powerful contact sending the ball just over the bar.
The best chance of the half fell just before the break. Reece Devine and Owen Evans combined neatly, with Evans driving a low effort that forced Luthra into a strong save with his legs. In added time, Joe Foulkes headed narrowly off target after a couple of testing deliveries into the area.
Harriers made a double change at the interval, with Walker and Hemmings making way for Jack Clarke and Amari Morgan-Smith, and it was the latter who was involved early after the restart. On 51 minutes, a deep cross picked out Morgan-Smith, whose glancing header drifted just wide of the far post.
The second half became more open and on 56 minutes Harriers broke quickly again, Marsh curling a firm effort a little wide. Bedford then began to enjoy a spell of pressure and Harriers had to dig in.
On 79 minutes a short back pass allowed Callum Ebanks a sight of goal, but Dibble was sharp off his line to make an excellent saving intervention.
Three minutes later Ebanks was again clean through after Harriers committed bodies forward, but his finish flashed wide of the post.
Harriers finished strongly and almost found a late winner. On 89 minutes Evans pulled the ball back to the edge of the area where sub Bruce Minaker guided an effort just past the upright.
Deep into added time, Minaker tried his luck from distance, the goalkeeper spilling the low drive before recovering at the second attempt.
