HARRIERS left it late but deservedly claimed all three points at Aggborough as Reece Devine struck in the 89th minute to see off a dogged Alfreton Town side.
It was not a purring display, but it was a controlled and patient one. Against determined opposition who worked tirelessly to limit space, Harriers stayed composed, kept probing and were rewarded with a winner that reflected their persistence across the evening.
Alfreton fashioned the first half sight on 16 minutes when Ayres found space, but he could not steer his effort on target as the ball drifted wide.
There was a moment of danger on 21 minutes when the visitors broke onto a loose ball. Christian Dibble reacted sharply, scurrying back to make an excellent save after Fewster’s effort took a deflection, preserving parity.
Harriers began to find their rhythm midway through the half. On 25 minutes, David Davis threaded a clever pass into Walker, who held the ball well before driving it across the box. It evaded everyone in red, but the move stayed alive and Ryley Reynolds headed over from the recycled delivery.
Just before the break, Davis and Walker combined again, with the ball eventually working its way to Seb Thompson. He steadied himself and struck, but the effort was off target as the sides went in level at the interval.
Harriers returned with intent after the restart. On 56 minutes, Thompson drove forward as space opened in front of him, his effort taking a deflection that took some of the sting out and allowed goalkeeper Casper to hold.
Five minutes later, Thompson again tested the waters from distance as Harriers continued to probe with patience. The strike was angled and cleanly hit, but Casper was equal to it once more.
The pressure continued to build. On 76 minutes, Devine showed superb determination at the by-line, nudging the ball past his man before pulling it back for Reynolds with the goal at his mercy. Reynolds’ effort struck Amari Morgan-Smith, who could do nothing about it, and the chance went begging.
Harriers kept going and the breakthrough arrived on 89 minutes. Reynolds led the charge and slipped the ball forward; it ricocheted kindly into the path of Devine, who needed no second invitation. He arrowed a low finish into the corner to spark celebrations inside Aggborough and claim his eighth goal of the season.
There was still time for one final moment on 90+2 when McDonagh met a long ball into the area, but he could not direct his effort on target and it drifted wide to ensure Harriers kept hold of a deserved three points at the death.
