HARRIERS Women stunned league leaders Lichfield City to secure a 1-0 win at Aggborough in the West Midlands Regional League Premier Division.
In front of a healthy crowd for what was the team’s first game of the season at Aggborough, Harriers battled bravely to pull off what was a shock victory against Lichfield, who had won their previous six league games without conceding a goal, notching 20 times in the process.
The visitors were the first to get a sight of goal, forcing a corner and a free kick that was sent narrowly over by Natasha Lawrence.
Harriers worked their way into the half with both sides looking to play good football, but almost found themselves a goal down after Aimee Taylor danced through the defence; Tilly Hall out swiftly to make a brave save at the forward’s feet.
The hosts went straight down the other end and nearly took the lead after a Sophie Richards corner was worked back into the area, but the ball just avoided the onrushing Dani Selmes at the back post.
Harriers were again indebted to the bravery of Hall after a corner posed a threat; the goalkeeper again out at feet this time denying Lawrence. In an even opening 20 minutes, chances were being shared and the next saw Richards cleverly feed Sarah Lojko, but her effort was collected comfortably by Emily Jones.
Both sides also experienced injury blows, adding a total of eight minutes to the end of the half. Fortunately for Harriers, Anne Johnson was able to return to the game after the interval.
The visitors controlled much of the second half, but a combination of strong saves from Hall as well as the the assistant referee’s flag kept the scores level. The visitors really should’ve broken the deadlock just before the hour mark, but Jodie Mason sent a shot off target before Hall saved well from Saddiqa Shan. Harriers maintained a threat on the break, with Lojko and Selmes working in tandem, but their efforts were well thwarted.
The only goal of the game came with eight to play as Mia Badland battled well in midfield before releasing Lojko, who lifted an effort over the onrushing Jones for her 14th goal of the season, sparking mass celebrations in the process.
Lichfield saw a late effort chalked off for offside as the Reds saw out a result that was against the odds, but richly deserved thanks to their solid defensive showing.
Harriers look set for a positive end to the term as they prepare for two Cup finals as well as a strong finish to the league campaign.
