RUSS Penn is looking forward to two ‘big and loud’ games as Harriers and Hereford clash over the Christmas period.
Hereford host the Boxing Day derby at Edgar Street on Boxing Day before the action returns to Aggborough on New Year’s Day.
In truth it has been a far from stellar league campaign for either side, so it’s reasonable to assume both will be looking at the festive ties as a way to find some momentum to begin the second half of the season.
Looking ahead, boss Russ Penn explained: “It’s two big games for both clubs, I think, and we’ll both want six points, if not four.
“It will be a good festive game with good crowds, and that’s the way we like it.
“It’s a ding-dong derby, two games, home and away and I’m sure both clubs are looking for the maximum.
“Hereford are a bit like us, they’ve been in a bit of transition, lost a lot of players last year and are trying to rebuild the squad.
“[The teams] haven’t hit the form that I know both Managers would want, but it’s a long season and everyone is still in the mix all the way from top to bottom.
“We’ve got 24 league games to play and there are plenty of points at stake.”
Harriers sit 12th in National League North at Christmas, with Hereford three places further back having played one game less.
But league form always seems to move one side when it comes to derby clashes, especially with so many past and present players and staff having represented both clubs.
Penn added: “It’s always a bit spicy and there were a couple of good games last year, home and away and in the Trophy.
“They’re always big games, always loud games and hopefully it’s coming back our end.”
Shane Byrne made his comeback from injury in Tuesday’s midweek win at Fylde following time out with a back complaint.
Ethan Freemantle continues to be assessed regularly after a recent concussion, while Alex Penny and Nat Knight-Percival are targeting New Year returns.
Reiss McNally, having been ineligible on Tuesday, will be available for selection on Boxing Day.
In support of Shelter’s No Home Kit campaign to raise awareness of and funds to combat homelessness, both Harriers and Hereford will be wearing their away kits for the Boxing Day clash.
Supporters are reminded that while it’s possible to purchase tickets on the day of the match, it is highly advised to do this in advance – and online if possible – to avoid queues or disappointment.
Tickets are available via the Hereford website.
Fans from both clubs can also buy tickets for the New Year game at Aggborough now.
Kick-off on Boxing Day is at 3:00pm
