AN UNSTOPPABLE comeback from Harriers saw them storm from 2-0 down to defeat Aldershot Town 4-2 at Aggborough.
A first game in charge for boss Phil Brown looked to be heading towards disappointment when Aldershot took the lead through a counter attack and finish from Josh Stokes – a lead the visitors doubled from the penalty spot when Cian Harries converted from the penalty spot.
Harriers, though, gave their new Manager a glimpse of the character and determination present in DY10, and unleashed a four-goal response without reply to bag three points and a valuable shot of momentum.
In fact, after going 2-0 down Harriers pretty much dominated the remainder of the game, their revival started when Ashley Hemmings reduced the arrears – also from the penalty spot when Amari Morgan-Smith was fouled – to net his 11th goal of the season.
Eight minutes later, Hemmings had bagged his second and got his team level. He control a Caleb Richards cross superbly before arrowing a finish past Jasper Sheik.
That seemed to give Aggborough the boost it needed as the players went in at half time – the players, too, evidently. The second period was barely a couple of minutes old when Morgan-Smith nodded Penny’s ball into the near corner of the goal to make it 3-2 and leave the visitors shell-shocked.
Before the hour, Hemmings and Jack Lambert fired over as Harriers began to find more confidence in front of goal, before the latter’s trickery set up Sam Bellis for an effort at the near post that Sheik dealt with well.
On 66 minutes Harriers were given their second penalty of the game when Morgan-Smith was again fouled inside the area. This time, Sheik came out on top in a battle with Hemmings as he beat away his penalty and denied the Reds man a hat-trick.
A dozen minutes later, though, it was 4-2 as Harriers deservedly gave themselves some daylight – Omotayo poking home from close range after Hemmings’ shot had been parried by Sheik.
There were even chances for a fifth, incredibly, but McNally nodded across goal and wide with just two minutes left of normal time, before a 92nd minute header from Morgan-Smith was saved well by Sheik, who’d done more than his fair share to keep Harriers from bagging more on the day.
