HARRIERS five game unbeaten run in the National League North came to an end on Saturday, following a 2-1 defeat at Peterborough Sports.
Emeka Obi’s second goal of the season put Harriers ahead on 34 minutes, before Sports responded immediately through Max Booth. It was Marcel Oakley who fired the hosts ahead in the second half, before the Turbines soaked up some late pressure from Harriers to see out their 2-1 victory.
In breezy conditions, chances were few and far between inside the opening stages, and it was the hosts who went on to threaten on nine minutes. Kaine Felix played Oakley down the right flank, his dangerous cross forced Christian Dibble off his line to punch clear, with a follow-up effort from Elliott Whitehouse fired over.
On 19 minutes a long throw from Kurt Willoughby was met by Obi, who could only steer his header wide. Minutes later it looked as if Harriers were to take the lead. A low cross from Jack Clarke fell to the feet of Amari Morgan-Smith, who, facing away from goal, span before firing a snapshot goal-ward, only to be denied by Sports goalkeeper Peter Crook.
Morgan-Smith then battled to keep possession, before setting Joe Foulkes on his way down the right, the latter opting to play Willoughby down the left, who went on to drive just wide. The hosts responded a minute later, Felix cutting into the right side of the box, firing a curling effort wide.
It was on 34 minutes Harriers took the lead through Obi. The ball made its way to Obi, central in the Turbines box, who looped the ball up and over the advancing Sports shot-stopper, 1-0 Harriers.
Their lead was short-lived however, as after the restart a long ball forward was chased down by Booth, who was able to slot his effort past Dibble to immediately level proceedings.
There were chances for both sides inside the closing stages of the opening 45, but it remained 1-1 going into half time.
It was on 59 minutes the hosts took the lead through Oakley. A great save by Dibble denied Samuel McLintock, but the rebound fell into the path of Oakley, who was able to slot home, 2-1 to the hosts.
Both sides continued to battle, looking for another goal. Chances for Reece Devine and Felix for the hosts went wide, but on 76 minutes it looked as if Harriers had levelled, until the referees assistant flagged for offside.
Willoughby back-heeled the ball to Dan Mooney, whose cross glanced off Morgan-Smith, before substitute Tobi Sho-Silva pounced to bundle the ball into the back of the net, only for the assistant to raise his flag.
Both sides continued to battle in the closing stages, but it was Peterborough Sports who took the points.
