MATT GARDINER lamented the ‘soul destroying’ climax to Harriers 4-4 draw against Salford City on Saturday.
The hosts let slip a mammoth 4-0 lead, conceding four goals in the final ten minutes of a dramatic afternoon.
Adding a point to the tally was less than a scant consolation for Harriers, who were absolute cruise control for the first 75 minutes of the match.
Goals from Emmanuel Sonupé, Joe Ironside, Lee Vaughan and Dan Bradley had looked to have done enough, before the league leaders struck back in fierce style.
“The lads were outstanding for 75-80 minutes… we scored four great goals against a good, experienced team who are top of the league,” reflected Gardiner.
“Everything was looking good, but it probably shows you where we are at the moment with the team and the squad, and that experience and missing those key personnel at the right times, the crunch times.
“As you can imagine, there have been a few words said…” Matt Gardiner
“We were looking comfortable… and were in control of the game. Their first went in and we started looking a bit on edge and, even at 4-2, 4-3 you’re thinking ‘we’re going to do enough’, but you could just sense it was going to come.
“I’m not sure how long we played at the end of it, but to concede so late on and the way we did to draw the game is a bit soul destroying to be honest.”
Gardiner added: “As you can imagine, there have been a few words said, and rightly so because we’re a very proud group.
“But it shows you where we are; it’s happened a few times in terms of that experience and seeing out games.
“We’ve got to learn very quickly, now especially as we have got nine games to go – we’ve got to bounce back and go again on Tuesday.”
