A CLINICAL first half saw Harriers pick up a comfortable 3-0 win over Southport at Aggborough.
Swift goals in the first 45 from Emmanuel Sonupé, Fraser Horsfall and Joe Ironside did the damage in a devastating period of around ten minutes. The reds were then professional in seeing the game out with little fuss in the second half.
Harriers forced a corner within around eight seconds to really set the tone for the afternoon, Sonupé going close to breaking the deadlock as she drove wide on 11 minutes – but making amends five minutes later as his powerful shot found the net with the help of a defender’s head.
That set pulses racing and the hosts set about adding to their lead, Horsfall’s fine downward header crashing into the net off McQuilkin’s delivery before Worsnop showed good hands in goal to deny McQuilkin himself.
Come 26 minutes it was 3-0; McQuilkin once again on hand to supply Ironside who struck an equally impressive header, looping into the net to leave the Sandgrounders staring down the barrel.
A Gilchrist header on 34 minutes was one of Southport’s first real chances of the day while Osborne also saw an effort deflected wide four minutes later as the visitors tried to claw back some of the deficit.
Kevin Daves’ men were, undoubtedly, improved after the restart though Harriers were assured in dealing with that threat – O’Connor getting a great block to Osborne’s shot three after the hour, the same player forcing off target with around 20 to go. Gilchrist then saw his effort cleared by O’Connor.
Harriers did have two sound chances to add to their lead in the final passages of the game but Croasdale’s lob was well held by Worsnop, before the stopper pulled off a remarkable save to deny sub Waring a second goal in as many games – a close-range attempt off Ironside’s flick somehow hooked away with a strong palm.
McQuilkin for the reds and Osborne for Southport had half chances inside the final ten minutes but, in the end, the day was comfortably the hosts’.

LEE VAUGHAN is enjoying being back in the thick of it for Harriers as they prepare for the visit of Southport to Aggborough on Saturday.
Full-back Vaughan is, in some ways, just weeks into his season having finally completed a long and arduous rehab from a broken leg sustained last year.
Some brief sub appearances have built up into Vaughan now being back as a regular staple of the starting eleven.
He began Tuesday night’s win over FC United of Manchester at Aggbrough and provided the ammunition for George Waring’s debut goal in the second period.
He could have scored himself, too, having drawn a top-corner save from the goalkeeper as he arrowed one towards the target.
Reflecting on that, he admitted to our YouTube channel: “It’s good to be back doing what I do.
“I have been a long time out and it was good to be involved and be a part of a goal – hopefully there are many more to come.
“We get in good positions – I found that when I was watching the games – and for someone like me that can only help with assists as that’s what I base my game on, getting assists for the lads as well as keeping them out at the other end.”
In-form Southport will provide Harriers with a real challenge on Saturday.
Kevin Davies’ men have won three of their last four matches – including a victory over Stockport – and have netted their fair share of goals in the process.
They’ll look to motor through the task of picking up points at Aggborough on Saturday, with Vaughan reflecting: “They are a decent outfit.
“I thought the fans were great on Tuesday night with the way they stuck with us..." Lee Vaughan
“I broke my leg against Southport last season so I remember them well, although I think they have changed the team around a lot.
“It will be a good day and, hopefully, we can carry on the good form we’re in.
“I thought the fans were great on Tuesday night with the way they stuck with us.
“They deserved the goals we gave them in the second half.”
Liam Truslove (knee) and Dan Bradley (calf) were Harriers’ only midweek absentees on the injury front and both will be assessed again before Saturday’s game.
Fraser Horsfall will also once again be available for selection after he served a one-match suspension on Tuesday.
Don’t forget, Saturday is our Season Ticket special which is giving every Season Ticket holder two-free tickets for the match to use to bring a friend or relative to sample the Aggborough atmosphere.
To help the afternoon along we’re also introducing a range of family-friendly activities with a covered marquee at the ground, not to mention the arrival of the Crabbie’s bus!
Fans attending can have their faces painted while enjoying some music, there will be a photo booth and a chance to leave your permanent mark on the event as we construct a very special mural as we go along!
That’s not all; if you fancy yourself as a hot-shot when it comes to football, you can test yourself with a try at our speed gun that will measure your efforts – not to mention various competitions and other bits and pieces.
All the fun will get started from around 1:30pm so make sure you’re here in plenty of time.
