RUSS Penn knows his team negotiated a tough challenge by getting past Blyth Spartans at Aggborough on Saturday.

Goals from Ashley Hemmings and Max Taylor helped the side to their first home win of the term, a 2-0 success.

It was far from an easy outing against a Spartans side who’ve struggled for points at the early stage of this National League North season.

True to form, they were never banished from the game until the final whistle, leaving the boss mightily relieved after the game.

“It was a tough game today for a number of different reasons,” he explained.

“When you come off the back of two away performances, [there is an] expectation of winning at home to Blyth, and that’s the hard bit, mentally getting players up for games without crowds and against teams who are struggling.

“We said all week that Blyth stay in games. We managed to score at a good time in the first half, we had a goal ruled out for offside that was clearly on.

“They stuck in the game and became a nuisance, and we started losing our feel for the game a little bit.

“Overall, I’m delighted with the points.

“It was a professional performance, we weren’t at our best but I’ve got to say that, in this league, you come up against all sorts of hurdles and we’ve overcome that one today.”
