HARRIERS picked up the ideal away-day win by snatching a 2-1 success at Boston United.
While Harriers fans have been able to enjoy plenty of amazing goals and some extremely one-sided games in their favour of their team, the trip to Lincolnshire yielded something different altogether as the group dug in to find a win when one wasn’t necessarily there for the taking.
It was clear to see why Boston are among the teams fancied to challenge this season – they forced Luke Simpson into a good early save after Jake Wright Jr beat the offside trap and shot.
The opening goal of day was up at the other end, though, with Boston caught cold at a corner as two Boston old boys in Alex Penny and Ashley Hemmings combined – a lovely corner met by Penny’s far post header that found the net.
Despite going behind Boston kept up their own pressure, Gordon heading off target and Simpson again extending himself to get a good pair of hands to a Leesley volley from ten yards.
Harriers weren’t without other sights of goal before the break and went close through Carrington who headed over on the half-hour, and Austin whose rising effort edge inches wide with just seconds left til the break.
Into the second half, the two teams traded a chance each when Hemmings curled one effort wide before Shane Byrne drove at goal, a low attempt only just whistling past Simpson’s upright.
Just past the hour, the Pilgrims were level. Wright rose well in the area to win a ball that looped up, the Boston man eagerly pursuing it and firing it beyond Simpson from six yards as it dropped down.
Oddly, that actually coincided with an improvement in the half from the visitors. On 76 the pivotal moment of the day arrived as Hemmings shot, a defender getting a good block in to send the ball looping in the air. Dewhurst the goalkeeper looked to have given it up as a corner and offered a token tap to the bar, only to be bamboozled as the ball dipped horribly and crashed into the net.
Harriers then showed some great game management to thwart the inevitable advance of the hosts in the final ten minutes or so – corners and throws all repelled as the Reds etched out another big, big result.
