Preview: Harriers v Alfreton

A look ahead to this weekend’s game at Aggborough Stadium….

NON League Day sees Aggborough host National League North action as Alfreton Town visit Worcestershire.

With no Premier League or Championship action this weekend, lower levels of the game are thrust in to the spotlight.

That includes the tie at Aggborough as Billy Heath’s Alfreton Town arrive looking to bolster their chances of getting into the late play-off picture.

The top seven is further away for Russ Penn’s charges, though the Harriers chief isn’t dwelling on that gap ahead of the weekend.

He knows his side can only win as many of the seven remaining games of the season as possible, and is aware Alfreton will be a tough enough proposition.

“We’ve just got to try and beat Alfreton on Saturday,” he said.

“They’re a team going well who are strong and have a good defensive record.

“We know what they are and they don’t play any differently to how they have over the last couple of years.

“They’re good at what they do and we’ve got to be right at it.”

Heath has shaped Alfreton into perennial play-off outsiders, thanks to a meanness that’s seen them lose just nine games all season.

Of their Manager, Penn added: “He’s done a fantastic job, but he’s done a good job wherever he’s been, so full respect to him.

“Their style suits them and we have to be sure we counteract that.”

Joe Leesley could well be involved on Saturday, recovering ahead of schedule following a serious knee injury earlier this campaign that threatened to end his 2022-23 term.

Joe McGlynn will sadly not feature for the team again this season as he continues to receive treatment at parent club Burnley, but Alex Penny is  back in contention as Harriers approach the tie with an otherwise fully-fit squad.

Penn said: “Alex Penny is training and we just need him to play as many games from now until the end of the season, because his season has been broken up since the start.

“That’s been really disappointing – we haven’t seen enough of Alex Penny.”

Nathaniel Knight-Percival remains the only absentee as he continues to serve a suspension.

Kick-off at Aggborough on Saturday is at 3:00pm.
