Saturday: Harriers v York

A look towards this weekend’s home cash with York City at Aggborough…

PHIL Brown wants Harriers to lay down a marker for the rest of the season with a strong showing against York City at Aggborough on Saturday.

The Reds suffered a first away league defeat under Brown at Woking in midweek, having won four on the reel prior to that.

With a return home now in their sights, Harriers welcome a York side also battling and striving for points, the two sides sat together in the current National League bottom four.

A good start and a maintained performance will be key going into this one, says Brown, who knows there will be yet another sizable crowd of 3,500 plus in attendance.

“This game is going to be vital from minute one,” he explained.

“We have got to show them that we’re a good footballing team, we’re organised, we’re fit, we’re disciplined, and we’re going to try and get in the face of the opposition.

“People are reading how we’re going to play and we’re not going to disappoint anybody – we’re going to try and get into your face and upset you if you we can do.

“The running capacity of the team has been there for everybody to see and we’re getting people’s respect because of the running power of the team.

“If we can bring that to the party and then bring that A Game that we’ve seen glimpses of in every game we’ve played… we’ve got a duty to perform for [our fans].

“How that performance manifest itself… we take whatever comes as long as we can win this game and make sure there’s almost a full house against Fylde on Tuesday night.”

Brown has already confirmed that skipper Shane Byrne will miss Saturday’s game – and very possibly the remainder of the season – after suffering a hairline fracture of the knee in Tuesday’s defeat.

He’ll be busily looking for reinforcements for his position, but accepts midfielder Regan Griffiths is already in pole position after making a positive impression in his appearances thus far.

The boss added: “Regan Griffiths has proved in the game and a half that he’s played that he’s a capable character, he’s certainly a capable player, that’s for sure.

“There’s every chance that he could get a run in the team, but we still need a little bit of competition in that midfield berth if the skipper’s going to be out for a number of games.

“So we’ve got our crosses to bear, we’ve got our challenges, but that’s the reason we’ve got a 21-man squad.

“The challenging for places now has to be manifested by good performances on a Saturday to keep your shirt for the Tuesday.”

Alex Penny (illness) will be assessed ahead of Saturday’s game, while Matt Preston and Samy Robinson continue to edge closer to their respective returns.

Krystian Pearce is once again eligible for selection following his suspension.

Earlier this season, Harriers edged the return fixture with a 1-0 victory over the Minstermen.
