HARRIERS suffered defeat on the road at Warrington on Saturday despite Ben Beresford’s first goal for the Reds.
Beresford’s well-taken goal after just five minutes served as the ideal start to the afternoon for Phil Brown’s men, the Birmingham City loanee finishing Ashley Hemmings’ corner.
There were some chances to make it 2-0 for Phil Brown’s men; Hemmings himself seeing one effort blocked in the area before Beresford, off a Maliq Cadogan cross, couldn’t quite connect with a header.
Midway through the first half, the lively Grivosti was played in on a Warrington counter. With the angle lined up perfectly it looked certain he’d find the net only for Christian Dibble to intervene with a fine save.
A second goal almost arrived from an unlikely source soon after. Paul Downing met a delivery into the area with a well diverted header that glanced just past the far post.
Warrington levelled matters not long before the break when a corner delivery found itself at the feet of Matthew McDonald. Dibble got a hand on to his low shot but couldn’t stop it clipping the post and rolling across the line.
The second half never truly got going as a spectacle, though the two sides traded half chances – Woods firing a free kick high over the bar for Warrington before Maz Kouhyar rifled over at the other end for Harriers.
Warrington’s winner arrived on 75 minutes. The influential Woods drove forward with the ball and eventually slid in Mikey O’Neill who kept his cool in front of goal to tuck a shot under the body of Dibble for 2-1.
A moment of pure madness took the game into injury time. Dibble, up for a corner, was first to meet the ball with a miscued kick, Warrington hooking the ball forward. Doing his best to ensure his side were clear of danger, the keeper swept the ball out wide, but into the path of a charging Miles who took aim, arguably a little too soon, his shot dragging wide of the unguarded net.
Still there was one more Harriers chance for a leveller. A delivery into the area was met by the head of Downing six yards out, but his header was scooped up by goalkeeper Atherton.
