ZAK Brown’s early goal wasn’t enough to prevent Harriers from falling to a 2-1 defeat at Chorley on Saturday.
Brown’s second goal of the term, a header off the inside of the post, gave Harriers the lead on nine minutes, that after the visitors had already gone close through other efforts from Brown and Ashley Hemmings that both required good saves from home shot stopper Matt Urwin.
In truth, Harriers really should have been further ahead before the break and had plenty of chances to be so – after Chorley failed to clear their lines, Caleb Richards acted decisively in firing at goal on 26 minutes, but saw his shot across the target flash wide.
Urwin was again called into action on 31 minutes; this time it was to thwart the advancing Luke Summerfield as the midfielder took aim from distance, the keeper lurching at it to parry it away. The pressure stayed on and Maz Kouhyar then went for goal, his attempt curling just over the bar.
Ashley Hemmings, with six minutes to go until the break, chipped over Urwin and the target before Chorley struck level with their first real chance of the day, Scott Wilson heading home from a corner.
The hosts began the second half in the way they ended the first, with a clinical edge in front of goal – just nine minutes gone after the restart when veteran Mark Ellis headed home off a long throw into the area.
Harriers were momentarily stunned by the brace of goals but did eventually recover and began to re-take control of the affair and, with it, the majority of chances. After Dibble had saved well at one end from a Chorley header, Urwin was at his best to deny sub Maliq Cadogan’s rising effort with 68 played.
Chorley then defended solidly from a corner two minutes later to clear away an Amari Morgan-Smith header off the line.
The hosts had to get in numerous, key, blocks and clearances, but with ten minutes to go even they watched on helplessly as Hemmings won a free header from a corner and directed it towards the goal – sadly for the Harriers man he couldn’t quite divert the effort into the net as the ball went over the bar.
