Saturday: Harriers v Southport

A glance towards the weekend’s action…

HARRIERS face Southport in National League North action at Aggborough on Saturday.

Saturday’s is the 44th meeting between Harriers and one of their most frequent non-league rivals.

Matches between the two only date back as far as the 1980s but have been packed in since then, and always guarantee goals to the point that there are no goalless draws in competitive action to be found in the 43 clashes to-date.

Last time out Harriers triumphed 3-1 at Haig Avenue in their push to make the play-offs in this division, Southport winning the Aggborough clash that season with a 2-0 success.

For Saturday’s 2024 meeting, Phil Brown will welcome back David Davis from suspension following his absence against Radcliffe last weekend as he faces a Southport side keen to get back into a rhythm after a challenging last couple of weeks.

In league action, they’re without a win since the 2-0 triumph over Rushall at the end of October. They have, however, drawn their last two games and proven a tough nut to crack with goalless draws at home to Marine and Needham Market.

In between those ties, there was a 2-1 win for The Port in the FA Trophy as they saw off Peterborough Sports to send them into their journey to Aggborough on a mini three-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Brown said: “It will be a decent game of football and we’re hoping upon hopes that the supporters turn up as there are a lot of offers out there and kids are coming in for free.

“Those kind of offers at this time of year are proper Christmas presents and I’ve got to thank the Chairman for that, it is a fantastic offer and I’d love to fill the place on Saturday and get the supporters here to reward the players for what they’re doing at the moment.

“They’re wearing the shirt with pride and that kind of performance should fill the people of Kidderminster with pride so, hopefully, another one on Saturday but maybe a big crowd to entertain.”

Of the visitors, the boss spoke of the many familiar faces within the camp, not least the man who will stand opposite him in the dugout, adding: “When I think about the connections we’ve got there, I’ve come up against Jim Bentley many, many times. He’s a stalwart of the lower leagues, as it were, and he knows how to win a game of football at this level for sure, so I’ll be showing him a lot of respect.”

Kick off on Saturday at Aggborough is at 3pm.
