TUESDAY night’s pre-season friendly at Worcester City ended in victory for Harriers.
Following a goalless first half, it was Dan Sweeney who put the hosts ahead on 50 minutes. Sweeney’s strike was cancelled out as Amari Morgan-Smith capitalised from the penalty spot in the 64th minute, before Kurt Willoughby came off the bench to score the winner late on.
Both sides enjoyed good spells of possession in the opening 45, but there were few clearcut chances. Harriers had an effort on target through Player D, who progressed down the left flank and cut into the corner of the City box, before his low driven strike was gathered by Haydn Whitcombe.
Action was plentiful in the second half; early on Kyle Belmonte tried his luck with a venomous strike from distance, which went straight into the hands of Christian Dibble.
Harriers shot-stopper was forced into action not long after, with Dibble quick to react to a City effort, down to his right to parry the ball out for a corner. But it was on 50 minutes the hosts found a breakthrough, with Belmonte’s cross meeting Sweeney to make it 1-0.
An equaliser looked almost certain on 59 minutes, when a long cross-field ball was chased down by George Walker, who did well to keep the ball in play, before striding towards the box, his curling cross just evading Morgan-Smith arriving in the middle. Moments later at the other end, Liam Lockett robbed the ball in Harriers half, advancing forward before squaring for Sweeney who fired just wide.
On 63 minutes Jason Adigun switched play out to Player D on the left, who cut in towards the box before being pulled down, penalty to Harriers. Morgan-Smith stepped up to then coolly level arrears, 1-1.
Both sides pushed on to look for a winner, making a number of changes from the bench. Dan Mooney made space well down the right to create a number of chances, and went on to create the winner.
Emeka Obi, just inside of the City half, played the ball out to Mooney on his right, who drove forward, aiming his cross for Willoughby at the far-post to slot home, 2-1 Harriers.
Next up for Adam Murray’s men will be the short trip to Stourton Park to face Stourbridge FC this Saturday, 26th July (3pm).
