Gaffer grateful for squad depth after big blow to Mooney

BOSS Adam Murray was keeping fingers crossed on the fitness of Dan Mooney following Saturday’s opener against Scarborough.

The summer arrival suffered a cruel blow just eight minutes into his Harriers debut at the weekend, picking a hamstring injury that cut short his afternoon.

Speaking on Saturday night after the game, the Aggborough chief was hoping for brighter news soon, confirming the call to substitute the former Chester man was as much pre-emptive as anything else, to avoid anything worsening.

“I’ll do some praying tonight and hopefully God helps us,” Murray said.

“We got him off just in time before it became anything serious, he just felt it cramp up and go a little bit tight, and it’s not worth the risk at this point.

“So we’re hoping it’s not too bad, we’ll see how it sets down over the next 48 hours and hopefully get him back as quick as we can.”

After Mooney’s enforced departure, Zanda Siziba stepped off the bench to make his competitive debut, later setting up the game’s only goal and himself going close to finding the net.

The ability to call on a player of his quality off the bench pleased the boss greatly.

He added: “I’ve said it all along, I’ve said to the Chairman and to Dean in the summer when I first came in: if we’re serious about being successful, you have to have that squad that, you can put somebody on who can affect the game in the same manner.

“I thought Zanda came on and was excellent, a real threat. He could’ve taken a couple of his opportunities a bit quicker, I think, and in a couple of weeks’ time I think he probably does.

“But he looked a threat… he looked a big outlet for us.

“All the subs coming on had an influence on the game and that’s what you need.”
