HARRIERS produced a dramatic finale at Aggborough to edge a 3-2 Bank Holiday win over Leamington.
It was Harriers who got themselves in front early. Seb Thompson’s dangerous low cross into the area asked questions of the visiting defence, with Theo Streete under pressure and only able to divert the ball into his own net.
The hosts built on that strong start, Joe Foulkes and Jason Adigun both trying their luck from promising positions, while Thompson was denied by goalkeeper Will Brook after meeting a corner with a firm header.
Leamington, though, carried their own threat and almost levelled just before the break when Dan Meredith surged forward and rifled a shot that Christian Dibble did well to tip over. Harriers still went in at half time with the lead intact, and they quickly doubled it early in the second period. Reece Devine’s corner was perfect to the far post where captain Jordan Tunnicliffe rose highest and powered the ball over the line.
That gave Harriers breathing space, but the visitors halved the deficit on 67 minutes. Harriers lost possession in a dangerous area and had to concede a free-kick, from which Owen Farmer stepped up and curled beyond Dibble.
Adam Murray’s side responded positively, with Kurt Willoughby close from a cut-back and Kai Innocent firing narrowly into the side netting after neat approach play with Thompson and Foulkes.
There seemed a lack of comfort for Harriers as the game entered the dying stages and that was proven when another lapse aided an equaliser, the Reds not quite able to clear their lines and Ethan Hill punishing them with a powered finish from close range.
At 90+5 minutes that would likely have been it for the vast majority of teams – the disappointment of letting a two-goal lead slip seeing the game drift to its conclusion.
The signs of the character within this newly-assembled group are starting to shine through and, in another classic Aggborough moment, there was time for one final twist. Harriers forced a late corner and Luke Spokes delivered superbly into the box, where substitute Ryley Reynolds – introduced only minutes earlier – rose to plant a firm header into the net and win it for his side.
Aggborough erupted, players celebrated and the group, together, were able to enjoy a win that, frustration aside, was still deserved.
