A DOMINANT first half Harriers performance wasn’t enough to guarantee the Reds three points as they were pegged back 2-2 at Southport.
Adam Murray’s side were firmly on top before the interval, goals form Zanda Siziba and Amari Morgan-Smith having them firmly in the driving seat.
A comprehensive first 45 minutes had Harriers on the front foot throughout, first creating a chance on 14 minutes when Reece Devine delivered an excellent deep cross towards Amari Morgan-Smith, whose stooping header dropped just wide of the far post.
Harriers made their advantage count on 18 minutes, though. A corner was not cleared and, as the ball bounced inside the six-yard box, Siziba reacted quickest to turn in his first goal of the season.
Amari Morgan-Smith took the ball in the area past the half-hour from the advancing Ryley Reynolds. The striker was deceived by an awkward bounce of the ball and saw his effort blocked but didn’t have to wait long to get his name on the score sheet. Just four minutes further along, his persistence in hassling and pestering goalkeeper Chris Renshaw paid off as a clearance clattered off him and into the net.
There was another opening before the break when, in added time, Jordan Tunnicliffe met a free kick at the back post but saw his header saved.
With the words of their Manager no doubt ringing in their ears, Southport set about their second half task with far more vigour and pulled a goal back three shy of the hour when Jordan Slew accurately buried the ball into the net from around 18 yards.
Harriers almost restored their two-goal cushion a minute after the hour. Reynolds once again found space going forward, his low cross met by Morgan-Smith whose shot was blocked behind.
The home side reached parity just three minutes later – Slew able to stride with the ball again, finding the net with an even more ambitious drive that left Dibble with no chance.
Harriers regrouped at that stage and certainly had the better of the chances to go on and snatch a winner. Siziba produced a good effort inside the area on 74 minutes that Renshaw batted away, before Kurt Willoughby, off the bench, was played in by Owen Evans, the striker’s shot behind wide of the far post.
