HARRIERS picked up a much needed three points on Sunday, as they ran out 1-0 winners over local rivals Stourbridge, writes Milja Stevenson.
With both sides heading into the fixture looking for points to boost their survival hopes, it was always expected to be a challenging contest for a Harriers team that had struggled for form in recent weeks.
Boss Andy Fisher named three changes from the league defeat to Sutton Coldfield, seeing Mill Rogers return to the starting eleven, and striker Seanna McCann and goalkeeper Daisy Jenkins making their debuts for the side.
Harriers started the game with intent and broke the deadlock in the seventh minute when McCann headed home a corner to put Harriers ahead.
Despite the early setback, Stourbridge put the Reds under pressure throughout the rest of the first half, but Harriers defended well to take the lead into the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams fighting to take control in a physical battle, and a few chances at either end.
Harriers remained composed and organised, to see out the victory, with McCann’s header proving to be the difference between the two sides.
This result sees Harriers climb to ninth in the league, a point clear of the relegation zone.
Attention now turns to another crucial fixture on Sunday (1st), as they travel to Northampton.
With the hosts, currently in tenth, and just one point behind Harriers- this match is another key battle in the fight for survival.
