Harriers were held to a goalless draw with Merthyr Town at Aggborough as the sides placed fourth and third respectively cancelled each other out.
Both teams showed attacking intent throughout and fashioned a series of half chances, but there was no decisive moment at either end to break the deadlock on a night where organisation and defensive discipline ultimately came to the fore.
Harriers started brightly and went close inside the opening five minutes. Ryley Reynolds delivered an excellent dipping cross that picked out David Davis in a central position, though the captain could not quite work Jaimie Cogman with his effort. Davis then turned provider moments later, laying the ball back for Reynolds, whose strike was kept out by the Merthyr goalkeeper.
The visitors responded after 20 minutes when Cogman was quickly off his line to gather a driven cross before it could cause problems. At the other end, Lewys Twamley tested Christian Dibble with a direct effort, but the Harriers goalkeeper was well positioned.
Merthyr had a sight of goal on 29 minutes when Jacob Maddox found himself in space, but his curling effort drifted comfortably wide, much to Harriers’ relief. Just before the break, Daniel Waldron worked an opening and went for goal, though his shot was fired wide, while Davis met a Reece Devine cross with a header that also went off target. A Harriers corner soon followed, but Emeka Obi’s header was blocked.
The second half saw the clearest opportunity of the match fall Merthyr’s way on 54 minutes. Jordon Garrick was played through on the angle, but Dibble stood his ground superbly and produced an excellent save with his boot to keep the scores level.
Harriers thought they had taken the lead just past the hour mark when a Reynolds corner appeared to go straight in, only for the referee to rule the effort out for a foul. Merthyr then went close again on 66 minutes as Cawley Cox found space at the far post, but nodded his effort down and wide.
With the game finely poised, Paul Kalambayi came close on 78 minutes, winning a header at the far post from a deep delivery that dropped narrowly wide. Adam Murray then introduced Kam Kandola, Amari Morgan-Smith and Seb Thompson, with Devine, George Walker and Reynolds making way on 84 minutes.
Harriers pushed for a late winner and almost found it deep into stoppage time. Kandola broke away down the right and pulled a low cross back into the area, where Davis guided his effort just inches past the post.
Despite the lack of goals, there was no shortage of endeavour or quality on show as two promotion-chasing sides shared the points.
