Recap: Harriers 1-0 Curzon Ashton

Another big three points for Harriers thanks to Austin’s wonder strike…

SAMMY AUSTIN’S screamer helped Harriers to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Curzon Ashton at Aggborough.

Austin’s fine individual form at the beginning of this season continued; his fifth goal of the season was one worthy of winning any game and duly did so on an afternoon that offered precious little else by way of serious goalmouth action.

The visitors were impressively disciplined throughout – scorned after a 3-0 defeat last time out, they were well organised and thwarted Harriers for much of the day while remaining a threat on the break. Oyibo on one such break saw a shot saved by Simpson with  just eight gone.

The Nash went mighty close to the opener on 20 minutes; ex-Harrier Dominic Knowles and shot at close range, defender Max Taylor being in the right place at the right time with a crucial block.

That proved to be the let off on which Harriers went and built on – Hemmings seeing a shot plenty wayward on 26 minutes before Austin’s moment of inspiration ten minutes later, taking the ball town, turning and shooting high into the top corner of the net with alarming ease.

The goal seemed to give Harriers a renewed impetus – they were close again on the stroke of half time, but goalkeeper Cam Mason did well to keep hold of a Hemmings header following a threatening Curzon cross.

Within six minutes of the restart both Sterling and Moyo had fired off target for Harriers before a sliced Knowles effort drifted wide.

The middle part of the half descended into something of a scrap, but Curzon had two key sights of goal as the game drew to a close; 74 minutes on the clock when a well-positioned Simpson held a deflected effort, before Knowles, three yards out, back-heeled wide when in the perfect spot to score.

It was far from pretty and may not have been as comprehensive as recent wins, but the visitors are due their share of the credit for that – Harriers held their nerve, and go the points that mattered with another big home game ahead on Tuesday against Kettering.
