RUSS Penn faces one of his own favourites for promotion on Saturday as Harriers host Spennymoor Town at Aggborough.
The high-flying Moors, currently third in the division, have been amongst the promotion contenders in National League North for years.
Penn fancies this might just be their year. It was a season that got off to the ideal start, a 2-1 victory at Boston United.
Wins against Southport, Hereford, Farsley (a 6-0 thumping), Fylde, Kettering, and Telford have all followed to put them in a very strong position.
While they exited the FA Cup after a replay against Southport recently, their league form suggests they’re very much in the grove – something Penn was keenly aware of as he previewed Saturday’s game on our YouTube channel.
“They’re one of my favourites to go up to be honest,” he said.
“They played Fylde the other day in a top of the table clash and Fylde came out on top, but [Spennymoor] have got some good players and a good manager who is really enthusiastic.
“He has good players for the level and a good budget, and they’ll come here looking to win the game.
“Like I always say, it is about us. If we are on it, we’ll give anyone a match, and we’ve got to be right on it on Saturday.”
With a well-assembled, vastly experienced changing room of players and a vibrant Manager, the Moors travel to Aggborough with threats aplenty.
“They’re fighting for promotion, and we’ve got to match them and more to get the points we need on Saturday.
Boss Russ Penn previews Harriers v Spennymoor – 30/10/21
“They’ve been consistent over the years and Managed well by Jason [Ainsley] formerly and Tommy Miller has taken right over and stepped right up to the plate.
“They have good, experienced pros at the level, and we’ve got to be ready. If we are, I’m very confident we can do what we have been doing to teams.”
Penn’s test will be in choosing to go again with the same starting eleven that picked up a hard-fought point at Chorley in midweek, finishing with ten men, or to rest players with a busy period of games continuing.
The likes of Elliot Bonds, Keith Lowe, Nick Clayton-Phillips and Amari Morgan-Smith just a few of the names pushing for more match minutes.
The Reds will again be without injured trio Lewis Montrose, Cliff Moyo and Joe Foulkes.
Harriers and Spennymoor fans are reminded that there is no longer the facility to pay cash at the turnstiles at Aggborough.

You can still pay on the day of the game at the Ticket Office (including in cash), but this incurs a £2 increase on our standard match day prices, so your best bet is to purchase in advance of the day if you can – as this will also potentially save you some queueing!
You can do so online via our ticketing platform or, if you need assistance, by calling 01562 823 931 during opening hours.
Again, it is still possible to buy your tickets at the Ticket Office (up to 15 minutes after kick-off), but you can’t pay cash at the turnstile.
Meanwhile, also don’t forget our match day programme, which this week includes a review in words and photos of the 5-1 win over Bradford, an interview with Clayton-Phillips plus loads more opinions, news, stats and more.
Kick-off at Aggborough is at 3:00pm on Saturday.
