ASHLEY Hemmings opened his account for the season with a brace to send Harriers through to the Emirates FA Cup First Round at the expense of Ashton United.

Hemmings’ goals secured a 2-0 win for Harriers at Aggborough, who head into Sunday afternoon’s draw.

It was far from an easy day at the office for the Reds, and it was Ashton who had the first chance of the day when Christian Dibble made a good save to keep out Marcus Cusani’s effort.

Sammy Robson caused all sorts of problems for the visiting back line in the first half and put in dangerous balls for Morgan-Smith and Phillips to try to attack, the former drawing a good save from ex-Harrier Luke Simpson.

Phillips went closer with 26 on the clock with an effort that dipped towards the top corner of the net, Simpson tipping the ball on to the bar superbly, before, later, doing similar to prevent Barry Maguire’s shot from distance finding the net.

Phillips was again close on 41 and 43 minutes with shots from each side of the area, Simpson holding the first then doing well to parry away the second which was struck with more venom.

Maguire got back excellently to keep a Sean Newton effort from crossing the line moments before the break, Alex Byrne’s looping effort evading the target not long before the hour as the visitors looked for a way through.

The breakthrough came the way of Harriers, and within six minutes they’d netted the two goals needed to ultimately put the tie to bed. Teasing the ball on the edge of the area, Hemmings eventually chipped the ball beyond Simpson and into the net.

The second came courtesy of a far post header at close range. Maguire had seen a shot blocked before the ball was re-worked and a a deep Caleb Richards cross found Hemmings.

Phillips then struck wide on the angle after a one-two with Morgan-Smith, before Ashton came close to netting through a Baird shot and a header on to the bar from Louis Potts.

In seven minutes of added time, Harriers went close to a third goal when Simpson saved from Brown, and Kobe Hall’s fierce shot smacked the side netting.
