A look ahead to Saturday’s visit of Chesterfield to Aggborough…

HARRIERS’ National League journey faces its “toughest test so far” when the Reds host Chesterfield at Aggborough on Saturday.

The Spireites are flying high at the top of the table, having won 13 of their 16 games thus far.

Even having played a match less than those beneath them, they’ve dropped just seven points all term and come to Harriers on the back of a 4-0 win over York City in midweek.

Saturday’s game might seem a daunting prospect to some, but Assistant Manager Jimmy O’Connor says the squad are relishing the challenge.

He said: “They’re the league leaders and straight away on the bus on the way back [from Altrincham], we were watching Chesterfield and doing our homework, as we always do.

“They’re an excellent team and part of the team looks like a League 1 side.

“Top of the league, scoring goals, top scorers in the division and full confidence, what a great challenge for us.

“The calibre of players they have in there. Will Grigg, Michael Jacobs, Tom Naylor, the list goes on and they have quality throughout the side.

“They will expect to get promoted, make no bones about it… they’re going about it the right way, so credit to them.”

O’Connor added: “It’s a fantastic challenge for us to see where we are.

“We’ve already said about the jump in the level and the quality going up in a division has been massive.

“This is the biggest test of that so far.”

Harriers again have mixed news from the treatment room going into the weekend.

Added to Reiss McNally’s recent return to fitness, Matt Preston also made the bench at Altrincham and is back available for selection.

O’Connor confirmed Joe Leesley faces a lengthier wait for a return as he recovers from a stress fracture in his back.

Shane Byrne (knee) continues his rehabilitation but remains out of action longer term. Jack Lambert (quad) is still a few weeks away.

Bailey Hobson’s loan from Chesterfield has been extended, but he is ineligible to face his parent club.

Elsewhere, winger Ryan McLean is available for a debut after making the bench as an unused sub in midweek. He signed on loan from AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday.

Kick off at Aggborough on Saturday is at 3:00pm.
