HARRIERS can confirm skipper Shane Byrne will leave the club.
Byrne, who has made over 60 appearances for the Reds across two seasons including 50 in the 2022-23 promotion campaign, is out of contract this summer.
The club tabled new terms to the former Boston United man, but Phil Brown has confirmed that, with those talks now at an end, it’s been decided the midfielder will move on to pastures new.
“When a team gets relegated, regardless of who is responsible for it, you’ve got to cut your cloth accordingly,” Brown explained.
“I can’t expect by Chairman to go blindfolded and keep the same budget willy nilly and throw money around like a crazy person.
“The contract we put in front of Shane wasn’t acceptable in Shane’s eyes and, consequently, I had to make a decision and unfortunately, we’ve decided to go our separate ways.
“The situation is that Shane loves the football club and working with me, but there is a cost where relegation is concerned, and I can’t keep him on the same kind of contract and money because we’ve gone down a division.
“He’d have been a great asset for us but, again, relegation comes at a cost, and we’ve had to go our separate ways.”
We’d like to wish Shane all the very best for the next chapter of his career and thank him for some great memories during his time at Aggborough. Good luck!
