HARRIERS begin their Emirates FA Cup campaign with the visit of Leek Town to Aggborough.
The Second Qualifying Round clash sees the Reds come up against the Blues, as DY10 plays hosts to last season’s Northern Premier League Division One West Champions.
Handy results against Basford and Matlock so far this term have showed signs Leek are adjusting well to their new level, a heavy defeat at home to Worksop last weekend responded to with a solid goalless draw at Hyde on Tuesday night.
Josh Brehaut’s charges will therefore head to Aggborough in reasonable enough confidence, also boosted by a 2-0 victory over Ashby Ivanhoe in the previous round of the FA Cup.
Having sidestepped one Cup upset of their own, Leek will now be looking to cause one at the expense of Phil Brown’s Harriers this weekend.
The Reds boss said of the game: “We’ve done tactical work with regards to Leek Town, which is always important. You’ve got to respect the opposition, it doesn’t matter what level they come from and doesn’t matter what game it is.
“We’ll respect Leek. We watched them on Tuesday night against Hyde. We found the system they play and the style of football, more importantly, and they’ll have a go – it’s the FA Cup at the end of the day.
“It’s a money grabber in the end, a money-making venture in the end. At this moment in time, you’re just piecing together that jigsaw to try and get to that stage.
“We’re doing exactly the same and we want to win the game, so we’ll be putting out a fairly strong team and giving one or two run-outs to players that have not been seen by the Aggborough crowd, so hopefully they’ll have a few bums on seats to come and watch the players they haven’t seen.”
The boss hinted that Jack Lambert and Reece Devine could be among those to get more match minutes this weekend as he continues to examine the credentials of his squad close-up.
“The FA Cup’s a nice distraction,” Brown added. “The likes of Reece Devine, Seb Thompson, Jack Lambert, players who haven’t played any real part in the league so far; we’ll start having a look at them to make sure that, when it’s time to put them into the league campaign, they come in and they’re ready for action.”
Harriers will definitely be without the injured Alex Penny, Paul Downing and Ben Beresford on Saturday, with Brown stating the former two may be closer to contention when Alfreton Town visit in National League North next weekend.
New signing George Cooper is likely to feature having joined on loan from Mansfield Town this week, with permission to play for the Reds in the competition.
Striker Kobe Hall could also be involved after being recalled from his loan spell with Stourport Swifts.
Kick off at Aggborough is at 3:00pm.
