Report: Harriers shine at York

Harriers picked up another excellent three points at York City

Two more goals for Ed Williams helped Harriers to a richly-deserved 3-0 win at York City on Saturday.

The scoreline only does just enough to tell the story of an afternoon on which the Reds – or yellows on this occasion – were again dominant against one of the division’s top teams.

Williams struck two excellent goals before the break, Joe Ironside adding the third not long after half-time.

It might have all begun so differently – just a few minutes in, York went so close with an effort from Griffiths that man home fans though the ball had sailed into the net when it had in fact hit just wide.

It was enough of a reprieve for Harriers who never looked back and duly took the game to their hosts, 12 minutes on the clock when a corner, half cleared, fell to Williams who strode on to it before diving a rising shot into the top corner from more than 20 yards that left Bartlett grasping at thin air.

On 21 minutes an odd incident saw York denied a leveller. A shot from Heslop had looked set to find the bottom corner only for Tait, in an offside position, to stick a boot out at it – somehow clearing the opposite post as the flag went up.

Nine minutes later Taylor went close as he stuck Vaughan’s low cross wide of the post, Heslop again firing over at the other end.

It was two on the stroke of half time; Williams again advancing with quick feet into the area and hitting an angled drive that gloriously sailed through the striding legs of the covering defender before nestling into Bartlett’s far corner.

Hall was forced to make his first real save of the day just after the restart as Parkin tried a long-ranger, but Harriers quickly reasserted their control on 55 as Ironside, supplied by Williams, confidently drove the ball home for his fourth of the season. He almost added a second for himself, too, seven minutes later but found Bartlet in good form as he tipped the ball around the post.

Harriers had even more threats from the bench and Richards, soon after coming on, curling a good effort wide on 73 minutes after a good run, then seeing a shot deflected behind four minutes later after fine work from Bradley had played him in.

Inside the last ten, there was almost a goal for unsung hero Daniels as he looked to tuck away Vaughan’s cross only to see the shot blocked, Hall duly earning his corn for the day just six minutes later as he flung himself at Heslop’s riser to keep the sheet clean and turn it over the bar.
