Dementia Action

Harriers players serving a festive meal at the dementia cafe

We are truly proud to have formed a relationship with the Dementia Action Alliance.

A partnership between the club and the Alliance will see the two working closely to ensure that Kidderminster Harriers becomes dementia friendly – enabling those with dementia to attend home fixtures and enjoy the experiences they once had with no stress or pressures.

In addition to making sure our match days are accessible, as a club we will be setting up a Dementia Reminiscence and Physical Activity session which will allow people within the local community to attend, talk through their love of sport, form new friendships and bring back those cherished memories.

“The Dementia Friendly work is the first of its kind from what I have seen.  The Harriers are a real community club.”   Supporter John Rhodes

For Christmas 2016, Harriers players and management visited a Dementia Café in Kidderminster and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon serving Christmas dinner to guests as well as chatting about football and all manner of things besides.

Then, in 2017 Harriers achieved a footballing first when their home match against AFC Telford United in January was officially nominated as a ‘dementia friendly’ fixture. People living locally and suffering with dementia were invited to watch the match with a carer for a discounted price in a designated area of the stadium.

The match was a huge success – John Rhodes from Shrewsbury was a spectator at the game, and he went on to say: “The Dementia Friendly work is the first of its kind from what I have seen. Anything that can raise awareness of any sort of condition has to be a good thing. The Harriers are a real community club.”
