Comeback seals Harriers win

Second half goals down Alfreton…

Joe Ironside

TWO second-half goals saw Harriers come from behind to beat Alfreton Town 2-1 at Aggborough.

After a bright start, Alfreton took the lead through Tom Allan’s goal and them moved into the ascendency.

Harriers were far brighter after the break and goals from Joe Ironside and Ngwatala sealed what were an important three points.

Harriers were the first team to establish any dominance in the game but after failing to take chances, they were left to rue a goal from Alfreton’s Allan on 17 minutes.

Sam Austin, Elton Ngwatala and Joe Ironside all had sniffs off goal before Allan struck, lashing through a crowd of bodies after Harriers had failed to clear a corner, finding the bottom corner from eight yards.

Ironside’s turn and shot late in the half was then as close as Harriers came to a response and, in truth, Hall’s efforts kept it from being more than 1-0 at the break, his efforts keeping out attempts from Allan and Westcarr – that before Allan planted another header just wide from a great position.

Harriers were a different side after the break – John Eustace made a change with Brown coming off the bench and, after a pressure-building quarter-hour or so, the hosts finally completed the turnaround.

After knocking on the door, Ironside had the team level as he chipped a cute finish from McQuilkin’s corner beyond Elliott and into the net, Ngwatala then on the spot three minutes later as, again from a McQuilkin corner that forced the goalkeeper into a save, the Frenchman tucked the ball in at the far post.

Harriers then moved forward with purpose as Brown saw a shot saved, McQuilkin aiming a free-kick just narrowly wide of the upright after lively sub Sonupe was upended just outside the area.

Sonupe wasn’t the only player to show well in coming off the bench – visitor German did so too for Alfreton and twice late on he was denied by expert stops from Hall who kept his team in front.
