Report: Horsfall nets in Port win

Three more home points for Harriers…

Fraser Horsfall

A CLINICAL first half saw Harriers pick up a comfortable 3-0 win over Southport at Aggborough.

Swift goals in the first 45 from Emmanuel Sonupé, Fraser Horsfall and Joe Ironside did the damage in a devastating period of around ten minutes. The reds were then professional in seeing the game out with little fuss in the second half.

Harriers forced a corner within around eight seconds to really set the tone for the afternoon, Sonupé going close to breaking the deadlock as she drove wide on 11 minutes – but making amends five minutes later as his powerful shot found the net with the help of a defender’s head.

That set pulses racing and the hosts set about adding to their lead, Horsfall’s fine downward header crashing into the net off McQuilkin’s delivery before Worsnop showed good hands in goal to deny McQuilkin himself.

Come 26 minutes it was 3-0; McQuilkin once again on hand to supply Ironside who struck an equally impressive header, looping into the net to leave the Sandgrounders staring down the barrel.

A Gilchrist header on 34 minutes was one of Southport’s first real chances of the day while Osborne also saw an effort deflected wide four minutes later as the visitors tried to claw back some of the deficit.

Kevin Daves’ men were, undoubtedly, improved after the restart though Harriers were assured in dealing with that threat – O’Connor getting a great block to Osborne’s shot three after the hour, the same player forcing off target with around 20 to go. Gilchrist then saw his effort cleared by O’Connor.

Harriers did have two sound chances to add to their lead in the final passages of the game but Croasdale’s lob was well held by Worsnop, before the stopper pulled off a remarkable save to deny sub Waring a second goal in as many games – a close-range attempt off Ironside’s flick somehow hooked away with a strong palm.

McQuilkin for the reds and Osborne for Southport had half chances inside the final ten minutes but, in the end, the day was comfortably the hosts’.
