Russ keen on home start

Reaction to the new National League North fixture list….

ASSISTANT boss Russ Penn admits Harriers will relish the chance to start the new season on home soil next month.

The new National League North fixtures were released on Wednesday and handed the Reds an Aggborough meeting with Leamington.

Harriers began away last time around with a 3-3 draw at Alfreton Town, while another memorable start on the road came with the 6-1 thumping of Curzon Ashton in 2016.

This time around, though, there will be some home comforts for manager John Pemberton and Penn to enjoy – even if the visit of Leamington is a tough prospect.

The Brakes won at Aggborough at the back end of last season and will undoubtedly be keen to get their own campaign off to a positive start.

Russ reflected on the fixture list and commented: “At every club I’ve ever been, you always look for that first fixture, and a home game is always great.

“It will be good to get a good crowd in at Aggborough on the first day with the sun out, and we’ll want to get the season going.

“Paul Holleran is a local guy and they’ll be pleased with the fixture as well.

“They had a good result here last season and will be looking to match that, I’m sure.”

It is, again, a hectic start to the new season.

The National League North calendar sees the first ten games packed in before the middle of September, with Penn adding: “They say you can’t get a true picture of the league until about ten games in, but you can certainly make a big stand early.

“Ten games is 30 points up for grabs and you have to be looking to get as many as you can.”
