Reds hopeful on injuries

Update on Ed Williams and Richard Peniket as Harriers plan for Alty trip…

HARRIERS are hopeful of having the likes of Ed Williams and Richard Peniket back in full training soon as the busy festive period of games approaches.

The duo have been out with injury in recent weeks and have yet to feature under new boss Jimmy Shan.

Peniket has been missing since the Gateshead game on 3 December with a combination of ankle and groin injuries, while Williams limped off eight minutes into the same fixture with a hamstring concern of his own.

Shan confirmed that both are expected to return to training at some point this week, and while it wasn’t known whether they’d be given the green light to feature at Altrincham this weekend, it is hoped their comebacks aren’t far away.

That would be an ideal boost to the Reds, with a packed period of fixtures ahead, including the double-header against Hereford.

The boss stated he’d heard plenty about the pair and is relishing the chance to work with them.

Of the potential to have them back on the grass at shortly, Shan said: “It’s looking that way, but we don’t know whether they’ll have enough training under their belts to be in consideration for the weekend.

“We’ll have to look at that as the days develop, but they’ll be back in full training at some stage shortly.

“For me, not having worked with those two lads, it’ll be like having new signings in the building.

“Hopefully they can show me what they’re all about – I’ve heard a lot of positives about both people as players and characters.

“I want them to come in and push hard to make getting into that starting eleven a very competitive challenge for the team.”

Ashley Hemmings is also being monitored ahead of the Altrincham game, having been forced to withdraw part way through the recent defeat to Boston United with a foot injury caused by a reckless challenge.

Declan Weeks (toe) is also being assessed but isn’t thought to be a long-term concern.
