Stamford AFC: Five things to know

Learn more about Tuesday’s opponents…

Harriers face Stamford AFC on Tuesday night in the Buildbase FA Trophy Second Round, a 7:45pm kick off.

It’s a quick turnaround for both sides with the cup draw being made on Wednesday 9th December, and our opponents only being decided on Saturday 12th December with Stamford travelling to Kidsgrove Athetic for their First Round tie, winning 2-0.

Here are five things to learn about the side from Lincolnshire.

THE DANIELS

There is evidence to support the existence of a football club in Stamford as far back as 1870. Various clubs came and went until 1894 when the town’s two most prominent clubs, Stamford Town & Rutland Ironworks, agreed to amalgamate.

Initially the club adopted the name of Rutland Ironworks, who were viewed as the stronger of the two, but the current club’s existence is generally accepted to date back to 1896 when the Stamford Town name was adopted to give the club a higher profile.

Stamford AFC are nicknamed ‘The Daniels’ after Daniel Lambert, the heaviest British man ever, who died in 1809 in Stamford weighing 52 stone or thereabouts and is buried in St Martin’s churchyard in the town.

WHERE ARE THEY EXACTLY?

Geographically, Stamford is located in the south-west corner of Lincolnshire, 15 miles west of Peterborough and 35 miles east of Leicester. They play their matches at the Zeeco Stadium which has a capacity of 2000 with 250 seats, having moved into the ground in December 2014.

In footballing terms, The Daniels play in The Pitching In Northern Premier League – South/East Division, which is tier eight of the English football pyramid. For reference, the Vanarama National League North is tier six.

THEIR TROPHY RUN SO FAR

So far, Stamford have progressed through three matches to reach our Second Round clash. In October, they won 2-1 against league rivals Lincoln United at home,  and 3-0 against Harriers’ local rivals Stourbridge at the War Memorial Ground. Saturday saw them win 2-0 win at Kidsgrove Athletic – another side from Stamford’s league – thanks to goals from Tom Siddons and Harry Vince, so are in good form flying into Tuesday’s encounter.

HOW’S THE SEASON GOING?

The Daniels have played seven league matches this season and are unbeaten, winning three and drawing one at home, and drawing all three away matches. They’ve netted 20 times and only conceded six, leaving them in 8th place on 13 points.

ANY DANGERMEN?

Tom Siddons scored the opener in their victory against Kidsgrove Athletic, and also netted in each of the previous two rounds. Overall, he’s found the net on eight occasions so far this season, so is a real threat in front of goal. That form carried on from last season, where he netted 18 times.

Midfielder Rob Morgan is also in form in front of goal, scoring five so far this season.

The Daniels penned a notable signing just 24 hours prior to their encounter with Harriers with former Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion, Barnsley and Panathanaikos goalkeeper Luke Steele joining.
