HARRIERS roared into the semi-final of the National League North play-offs after a battling 1-0 win at Alfreton Town.

Yet another early goal set the Reds on their way at the Impact Arena, Amari Morgan-Smith needing just 33 seconds to plant a superb header from close range into the bottom corner.

That sent a huge away following into raptures and set the tone for arguably one of the most disciplined, hard-working Harriers performance for many a year.

Alfreton, strong and direct, went close to a leveller just four minutes later when Matt Rhead put a header on to the roof of the net and closer still when Josh Clackstone’s snatch shot was gobbled up well by Christian Dibble before the half-hour.

Rhead, ten before the break, thrust himself at the ball and headed another off target as the hosts tried to build momentum that ultimately never came.

Caleb Richards almost repeated the trick of netting early in the second half – just 20 seconds gone when the let fly from distance, his effort going over George Willis’ goal.

Ten minutes or so later, Willis pulled off an excellent stop to prevent Penny making it 2-0. The Harriers man chested down a corner and shot at close range, Willis blocking bravely.

It was Harriers who got themselves into the ascendency and stayed there – only a goal line clearance from Connor Teale kept the hosts at bay before Penny again headed over the bar, all around the hour mark.

At that stage the game became a contest of long balls from the hosts and determined, dogged blocks and defending from the visitors as Alfreton knew something was needed if they were to at least extend the night into extra time.

In the end, though, it was Harriers who had the better of the chances on the break. Hemmings, on 77 minutes, blazed wide of the far post with a powerful drive before Byrne’s curling effort was clutched gratefully into his chest by a grateful Willis.

There would be no way through the visitors who stood tall, taking a moment to celebrate with fans before switching focus to Sunday’s semi-final at King’s Lynn Town.
