BAILEY Hobson’s first Harriers goal wasn’t enough to prevent an undeserved defeat for Reds as they went down 2-1 to Oldham Athletic.
Harriers went behind on the night but battled back well, deservedly level through Hobson’s neat second-half finish.
Despite a surge on the Oldham goal it was the visitors who took home all three points following Alex Reid’s close range finish with 12 minutes left to play.
Harriers had seen the first chance of the night through Oxlade-Chamberlain, his effort from distance saved well by goalkeeper Hudson.
With 13 played and after Knight-Percival was forced off with injury, Oldham cleared a Harriers corner on to their own bar before Hemmings curled a shot high over the target.
Eight minutes later, Oldham were ahead. Devarn Green took the ball in midfield and teed himself up before letting fly, leaving Christian Dibble no chance as a shot rifled into the far corner.
The hosts responded well to the set-back, though, and went close through Hobson twice in the following 12 minutes as efforts went off target.
Harriers kept up the pressure and, before the break, Krystian Pearce’s inventive, if possibly unintentional finish from close range was held and another corner was tipped over the bar.
Oldham started the brighter of the two in the early stages of the second half when Dickinson and Nuttall went close with efforts, but Oxlade-Chamberlain was arguably closer on 56 minutes when his superb touch found him space in the area, his effort thumping the side netting.
McDonagh was denied just before the hour but, just after it, he set up the leveller with great pace and strength followed by a low cross that invited a composed finish from Hobson.
A fairly end-to-end half saw Dibble then produce an excellent save to thwart Sutton’s low finish, before Morgan-Smith headed over the bar and Zak Brown’s effort was held by Hudson.
Harriers were very much in the ascendency, so the second goal was a sucker punch when it came. A cross into the area found a header some 14 yards out that proved a tricky take for Dibble, Reid on hand to hook home a rebound from just a few yards.
With three gone of five in added time, Morgan-Smith had a sight of goal but couldn’t get power behind his shot from the edge of the area.
