LEAGUE leaders Chesterfield claimed three points at Aggborough courtesy of a 3-1 win over the Reds.
A first goal of the season for Zak Brown in the first half was enough to have things level at the break, but further strikes from the Spireites in the second half finished the affair.
It was actually a decidedly level first half with Harriers perhaps shading the number of chances created – the first being on 11 minutes when Sammy Robinson lifted a ball upfield that caught out goalkeeper Ryan Boot. Harriers worked the ball to Ryan McLean who, on his debut, latched on to it and shot, Boot getting back and making the save.
Armando Dobra crashed an effort into the Harriers side netting on 20 minutes, which ended up being a warning as Chesterfield took the lead just after, robbing the ball and charging on the counter where Ollie Banks finished impressively.
Harriers stayed o the task, though, and had a McLean shot blocked within seconds and saw Robinson have a free kick comfortably held before Brown’s equaliser. It was a good, downward header to tidy away another quality Robinson delivery.
It was good, end-to-end watch in the first half and on 37 minutes Harriers needed a good block in the area to stop Banks doubling his tally, while only a last-ditch intervention prevented McLean from scoring on the counter at the other end.
Chesterfield came out strongly in the second half and, two minutes after the restart, Will Grigg did well to etch out a shot at Dibble’s near post that the shot-stopper did well to save.
On 52 minutes there was a chance at either end. Tom Naylor was thwarted by Dibble at close range, before Brown attempted to chip Boot and couldn’t quite nail the execution.
Chesterfield were back in front on 67 minutes. Harriers were again getting in blocks and challenges, but just as Penny was able to prevent Grigg’s effort finding the net, Banks gleefully scored the follow-up.
It was only at that point that Harriers seemed to lose confidence, bookings and substitutions from both sides really disjointing the affair and allowing Chesterfield to keep a firm control on their winning position.
After picking up two yellow cards, Reiss McNally was sent off on 83 minutes after a foul, a blow then further compounded when, in injury time, another sweeping move saw Grigg confidently head past Dibble to put the game beyond any doubt.
Not a day without positives for Harriers but, ultimately, nothing to show for it come full time.
