HARRIERS again netted late to keep themselves in the thick of the National League relegation fight with a 1-1 draw at Wealdstone.

Once again the Reds showed great determination and character when the chips were down. With 80 minutes played, the picture at the foot of the table looked far from ideal, but a stirring finale ensured the team stayed right in the mix with just five games left.

Wealdstone, showing few ill effects from their fixture pile-up, controlled the opening stages and went close on six minutes when Max Kretzschmar’s driven free kick took a deflection, Christian Dibble producing a good save to tip it over the bar.

On 18 minutes, Charlie Barker’s shot from six yards out was well saved, but the danger remained as Kallum Cesay’s rising shot looped and dipping, bouncing off the bar. Still, the pressure stayed on, only eventually easing once Sean Adarkwa’s header bounced off the foot of the post.

Amari Morgan-Smith showed great strength and composure with 35 on the clock to carry the ball into the area and shoot, the ball rolling agonisingly wide of the post.

Seconds into first half added time, the home side had their breakthrough. Kretzschmar was played through on the angle and fired a firm finish, past Dibble and high into the net.

From almost the same position, more strength and drive from Morgan-Smith got him in on goal, but goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst beat the ball away.

With 70 on the clock, Lambert and Hemmings combined before the ball was played low and toward sub Emmanuel-Thomas – his effort instinctively parried over by Dewhurst.

Six minutes later, Dewhurst saved again, this time from Lambert, before the 82nd minute equaliser saw Lambert twist past his man before freeing Hemmings, who drove low and with accuracy towards the bottom corner, in off the post.

In added time there was even a chance for Harriers to win it. An Emmanuel-Thomas corner was met by Penny, nudged across toward Pearce at the far post who saw an effort from just a few yards out hit the woodwork.
