Recap: Spennymoor 1-1 Harriers

A look back at Saturday’s draw on the road

AMARI Morgan-Smith cancelled out Isaac Fletcher’s first half strike with a superb overhead kick to ensure Harriers left Spennymoor with a share of the points on Saturday afternoon.

Fletcher netted his 10th goal of the season to give Moors the lead on 40 minutes firing low past Christian Dibble. Harriers responded on 60 minutes through Captain Morgan-Smith, who produced an overhead kick off of a Maz Kouhyar cross.

It was a quiet opening to proceedings as both sides looked to gain early control. On three minutes a great Joe Foulkes cross from the right was met by Harry Ibbitson rising in the middle, unfortunately he could only guide his effort over the bar. Five minutes later Harriers went close, a cross-shot from Zak Brown seemed to be curling towards the top-right corner, before Moors ‘keeper Brad James intervened.

On 18 minutes Corey McKeown rose to meet a cross from the right, but the Spennymoor man proceeded to plant his header off target.

Nine minutes later, Jack Lambert picked up the ball midway inside the Spennymoor half, driving forward he fired a deflected low effort forcing the Moors ‘keeper James down to his left to save.

In the 36th minute Brown and Foulkes exchanged passes down the right before a cross into the box met Skipper Amari Morgan-Smith, his headed effort going over.

It was the hosts who took the lead minutes later. Fletcher advanced into the left edge of the Harriers box, and with Christian Dibble advancing, Spennymoor’s number 8 kept his nerve to slot low into the bottom-right corner, 1-0.

The hosts continued to press into the closing stages of the opening 45, McKeown picking up the ball just outside the Harriers box, driving towards the penalty spot, before seeing his effort deflected wide.

Moors went in pursuit of a second in the early stages of the second half. On 53 minutes a Matty Dolan corner was met by Callum Ross, his header ricocheted off the bar. The resulting corner saw Michael Ledger have his header cleared off the line by Caleb Richards.

Harriers responded seven minutes later with the leveller. An overhit Richards cross was chased down by Kouhyar, and from the byline the winger flicked a cross back into the box  where Morgan-Smith was waiting. Facing away from goal, he jumped backwards, catching the ball with his right foot in a perfectly executed overhead kick, there was no time for James to react, 1-1.

Not satisfied with one point, Phil Brown’s side continued to press. With Kouhyar exploiting space down the flank, on 78 minutes Harriers number 19 forced a save from  James, before stoppage time saw Kouhyar fire the final chance of the game low and just wide.
