Recap: Oxford 1-1 Harriers

A look back at Saturday’s draw on the road…

HARRIERS had to make do with a share of the spoils at Oxford City after an injury-time goal cancelled out Ashley Hemmings’ goal.

Hemmings had headed Harriers into a 12th minute lead but, despite controlling large spells of the game, the Reds had to share the spoils, having also kept out a penalty thanks to sensational work by Christian Dibble.

The opening goal was a great team move. Kam Kandola and Maz Kouhyar combined to set up Reece Devine who crossed to the far post where Joe Foulkes met it, a sweetly-timed shot met by an equally strong parry from Kai McKenzie-Lyle. A determined Foulkes followed it, though, winning it back and quickly crossing for Hemmings to head in from close range.

With 24 minutes played, Hemmings shaped to cross but then took aim, the distance effort swerving on its way towards goal where McKenzie-Lyle held it well. Six later, Josh McEachran sliced wide for the home side before Josh Parker’s free kick drifted over Christian Dibble’s target.

With five to go until the break, a Hemmings delivery caused panic in the home area and only a sublime piece of defending from McEachran prevented Jim Kellermann from slamming the ball home from six yards as the ball bounced handily for him.

After the restart, Hemmings lifted a free kick over the bar and, ten minutes later, Kandola almost found the net from Kouhyar’s delivery as Harriers went mightily close to a second goal.

With 67 on the clock, the referee spotted what he adjudged to be a foul in the area on Jalen Jones, awarding Oxford a penalty. Josh Ashby stepped up from 12 yards, but was denied in astonishing circumstances as Dibble met his initial effort with a strong save, an even better stop within a second as the follow-up from Ashby was also kept out.

Harriers will have believed they’d done enough to see the game out but there was a sting in the tail when a deep cross was dinked to the far post where Jones rose highest to nod it back across Dibble and into the net.
