HARRIERS saw their FA Trophy run ended at the last 16 stage as they were beaten 1-0 by National League Sutton at Aggborough.
Will Davies netted an 80th minute winner for the Step 1 promotion chasers to deny the Reds a place in the quarters.
Harriers did have a glorious chance to snatch the lead with barely three minutes on the clock. Ryley Reynolds had done superbly near the by-line to get the ball into the area, a clearance eventually reaching Amari Morgan-Smith who fired over the target from around eight yards.
The home side thought they were in on goal with 20 played; Ashley Hemmings latching on to Christian Dibble’s ball forward and taking an expert first touch, his progress into the area halted by what looked to be a pull of the shirt, though it drew no interest from the referee.
Zak Brown and Ashley Hemmings combined well after 36 minutes. Their move played in Morgan-Smith who strode into the area and took a touch before driving at goal, the ball firing over the bar. Three minutes later, Hemmings went for goal himself from around 22 yards, his curling effort swerving and causing problems for goalkeeper Jack Sims who sprung into action to make a solid save. The resultant corner was almost headed in by Reiss McNally, but a cluster of bodies managed to clear.
Kam Kandola was an unlikely goal source on 53 minutes when he met a looping delivery into the area with a volley from the penalty spot that flew over, before Morgan-Smith’s next attempt looked destined for the net before a covering defender superbly diverted it behind from a corner. Chances continued to mount, and Brown went within a whisker of the opener when his distance effort flew just past the woodwork with the goalkeeper beaten.
The day’s only goal came on 80 minutes but it went Sutton’s way after they stole the ball in the middle of the park before launching a counter. A fortunate deflection off a ball into the area looked like it would find its way to Davies, but Dibble did brilliantly to throw himself at it to block, only for the loose ball to be poked into the net by Davies, lay on the ground. It was an fortunate but instinctive finish from the front man who continued his recent scoring form.
Dibble would be worked again, saving from De Silva and watching an effort clip the post as Sutton searched for a second with Harriers pushed for an equaliser. In the end, the National League side went through.
