Recap: Southport 2-1 Harriers

A look back to Saturday….

HARRIERS had their place in play-offs confirmed after a final day defeat at Southport meant they lost out on top spot and the title.

After a slow first hour of the game, Reiss McNally struck to bring Harriers back into the game at 2-1 but the rally proved too little, too late to save the team’s title charge with focus left to switch on the play-offs.

The quick feet of Ashley Hemmings looked to have put Harriers in a strong early position as he waltzed past his man in the area before laying the ball off to Zak Brown who saw a low drive angle past the foot of the far post.

Seven minutes later Amari Morgan-Smith found the roof of the net with a header as chances began to tick over for the visitors, but good defending stopped Hemmings from firing on 18 minutes after he looked to have found room on his way to goal.

A firm effort from the Aggborough top scorer arrowed wide of the target on 31 minutes but was the home side who took the lead two minutes later. Uncharacteristically unable to clear from a corner, Tom Moore stabbed home from just a few yards.

Harriers tried to respond quickly through efforts from Hemmings and Maz Kouhyar, but it was Southport who really made it a mountain for the visitors to climb when, within a minute of the restart, Danny Philiskirk struck outrageously from 25 yards into the bottom left corner of the net.

Come the hour, Harriers had a goal back and briefly a shot of momentum in the arm as a deep free kick was nodded on to McNally who made no mistake in poking home from at the far post.

A further shot from McNally blazed wide before, later on, a Ryley Reynolds piledriver was comfortably taken by Chris Renshaw.

Southport held on, though, and went close to a third when both Moor and Dior Angus had shots at goal blocked.
