Recap: Harriers 2-2 Worksop

A look back to Saturday…

(C) Geoff Smith

HARRIERS showed real character at Aggborough to fight back from two goals down and earn a deserved 2-2 draw against Worksop Town.

The Reds finished the contest firmly on the front foot after a dominant second-half showing and might have taken all three after piling on the pressure.

However, the visitors made the sharper start and capitalised early as Harriers struggled initially to get to grips with Aleks Starcenko and Lewis Whitham. Worksop took the lead on three minutes when Starcenko broke into space down the right and drove at goal. Christian Dibble could only parry the initial effort, and Jordan Burrow reacted quickest to steer the rebound home.

Dibble was soon back in the action, pushing Whitham’s driven strike away after the forward found room to advance, but the pressure told again moments later.

Whitham drove forward once more and this time his effort took a significant deflection, wrong-footing Dibble and finding the net to put Worksop two goals ahead inside ten minutes.

Harriers gradually began to steady themselves and started to apply pressure of their own. A corner midway through the half caused problems in the Worksop area, with the goalkeeper forced to punch clear before Charlie Cooper met the loose ball, though the follow-up was gathered.

Ryley Reynolds then looked to turn centrally and shoot, but his effort lost momentum as it bobbled into the turf and was claimed by Lewis Forshaw.

Worksop had an opportunity to extend their advantage on the half-hour when Harriers were caught in possession, but Vaughan Redford’s effort drifted well wide, allowing the hosts to regroup and reach the break still in contention.

The second half saw a much-improved Harriers performance. Whitham fired over from distance early on, while Emeka Obi met a corner at the far post just after the hour, only to see his effort fall safely for Forshaw.

Dibble continued to deal calmly with anything sent his way, holding Whitham’s header from a deep delivery as the visitors looked to protect their lead.

The momentum shifted decisively on 63 minutes. George Owen Evans showed great strength and awareness as the ball broke kindly through the middle, twisting away from his marker before driving a powerful finish beyond Forshaw to reduce the deficit and lift the tempo inside Aggborough.

From that point on, it was largely one-way traffic. Harriers pinned Worksop back, with George Walker a constant source of delivery from wide areas as crosses were repeatedly sent into the penalty area.

The pressure intensified during the closing stages, with the visitors forced deeper and deeper as Harriers searched for a leveller.

That pressure finally paid off deep into stoppage time. Walker again surged forward and delivered from the flank, the ball dropping at the far post where Reece Devine met it sweetly on the volley, smashing his effort in off the bar to spark celebrations and complete the comeback.

With the control and chances created in the final quarter, Harriers could easily have taken all three points, but the response shown after a difficult opening ensured a fully deserved point at least.
