HARRIERS were held to a 1-1 draw by Southport at Aggborough on Saturday.

The Reds came from behind to be level at the break but unable to find a winner despite controlling much of the second half.

An early warning came on 17 minutes when the ball deflected kindly into the path of Jordan Slew. He broke forward with purpose, but Harriers recovered well and Joe Foulkes was alert to clear the danger.

Southport took the lead two minutes later. Malakai McKenzie did well to get past his man and drill a low cross into the area The ball made its way towards the far post where an unchecked Tom Moore was on hand to tap home.

Harriers responded positively. On 26 minutes a good ball forward looked to release George Walker in behind, but goalkeeper George Pickford came out and stood his ground well to block the opportunity.

The equaliser arrived on 33 minutes. Another corner caused chaos inside the box and Charlie Cooper reacted quickest to a loose ball, getting on the end of it to nudge it past the goalkeeper and make it 1-1.

On 41 minutes McKenzie drove forward again and shot at Christian Dibble, who blocked smartly. Then, on 45 minutes, the visitors won the ball in midfield and went for goal from distance with Dibble up field, but the Harriers goalkeeper recovered to tip the effort behind.

Harriers carried that momentum into the second half. Four minutes after the restart Matty Williams glanced an effort from a corner that rose and clipped the bar before heading away from goal.

After the restart, there was a chance apiece when Matty Williams saw his looping header clip the woodwork – after, Cooper tried his luck from distance on 50 minutes but his effort flashing wide.

Ten minutes later Ryley Reynolds turned well and drove goalwards, the shot taking an awkward bounce before Pickford did well to turn it aside.

Adam Murray looked to freshen things up on 62 minutes as Ashley Hemmings and Reynolds made way for Danny Waldron and Kam Kandola.

Waldron was quickly involved. On 66 minutes he made a good run and sent in a low cross, with Walker having two bites at the cherry before steering his effort wide.

Harriers continued to push, but the contest took a late turn on 87 minutes when David Davis was shown a second yellow card in the space of six minutes for hurling the ball away following a foul.

Even with ten men, there was one final opportunity deep into stoppage time when a ball into the box was met by Waldron, though the header lacked enough power to trouble Pickford, who held on.
