After the strangest of years in 2020, Harriers players have put the squad’s ‘Christmas Kitty’ to great use – by donating it to help feed vulnerable families over the festive period.

As old a tradition as there is in football, the Aggborough squad rack up internal kitty of fines money for breaches in squad and dressing room etiquette.

That money usually funds a festive outing for the team courtesy of the squad Christmas party, something simply not possible in 2020 and the present climate. Rather than hold on to the money or waste it however, the lads made the collective decision to donate it to help feed families who’ve hit on hard times during a challenging year.

It was been given to Club Chaplain Adam Whitley and the team at Lifecentral Church to help fund their festive Food Appeal that will feed 50 local families who for whom Christmas represents a time of struggle.

Furthermore, CEO Neil Male confirmed that this donation has been matched by an equal one on behalf of the Club’s Board.

“The lads as a first team have decided to donate £600 of what would of been the Christmas kitty to go somewhere it would be valued and really needed,” boss Russ Penn said of the gesture.

“This is a great cause and the relationship we have built with Adam Whitley has made this happen. He has a great rapport with the lads but, just as importantly, everyone at the club as a whole.”

Neil Male added: “We’ve shown that as a Club, even in truly challenging times for us a business, we want to support and help our local community.

“The players have made a fantastic gesture and Richard and myself as owners have been only too happy to match that – this Food Appeal will make a real difference to people’s lives and that’s at the heart of what the Club should be about.”
