Russ Penn on the return to pre-season and more…

RUSS Penn was happy to be around “smiling faces” as his players returned for pre-season training on Thursday – and can’t wait to see more at Aggborough.
Penn’s welcomed his squad back to COSE for the first day of the summer with eyes firmly fixed on the new 2021/22 season.
It comes, of course, on the back of a bizarre last year to 18 months in not only football but the world as a whole.
With that in mind, it was a happy Manager who spoke to our YouTube channel after overseeing that first session – and who couldn’t resist looking forward to the weeks ahead.
“It has been a long time, hasn’t it?” he said. “I’m just delighted to be back, to be honest.
“The sun was out, the lads are back and there were lots of smiling faces.
“It looks positive and looks more like things are going to start moving on, so from my and our staff’s point of view, we can concentrate on the next game, and on a good six weeks of pre-season; getting the lads as fit as we can, enjoying some home games with crowds, which is going to be great, and just seeing people’s faces again.
“I have got a lot of friends in the stands, and I haven’t seen them for a long time.”
The fact so many of last season’s squad are back for more this time around wasn’t lost on the gaffer – he now says he wants to fine tune his number as the summer weeks progress.
“We’ve got 15 signed going into the first week of pre-season which is great for our club,” he added:
“It just shows some stability and structure within the camp and the club – the owners and the Board have been great to me and backed me in what I want to bring in.
“Realistically, we have now got to build that squad and probably add one or two more to make us a threat going forwards.”
