HARRIERS made it to the First Round proper of the Emirates FA Cup after a professional job and 1-0 win at Bedfont Sports on Saturday.
The teams exchanged early chances in this one – the vastly experienced Wellard drawing a good save from Luke Simpson with a close-range effort after just two minutes, while Austin warmed the hands of the shot-stopper at the other end with a rising shot ten minutes later.
Morgan-Smith then had a free-kick held and Hemmings struck one wide as an even Cup tie started to settle itself down, Bedfont always doing well to ensure that the majority of Harriers efforts were from distance.
Past the half-hour, Penny looked to catch Kyriatzis out after he’d punched away Austin’s shot by looping it back towards goal, but the former Boston man’s effort was wide – as was Morgan-Smith’s drive with six minutes before the break.
After the restart, Hemmings was unable to trouble the keeper from close range when in a good position and Austin angled a curling effort wide as Russ Penn’s men showed good intent early in the period.
That determination got its rewards just before the hour with the opening goal – another forward move saw the ball crossed into the area and turned goalwards by a Bedfont shirt, the keeper doing well to keep it out, but only as far as Morgan-Smith who planted it back beyond him and in to the net.
Austin, sensing more on 72 minutes, got a good header to a Hemmings cross that Kyriatzis saved well, Hemmings himself then denied as he shot from just inside the area soon after.
As the game entered the final stages, Harriers only ever created more opportunities, while doing well at the other end to keep the door firmly shut.
Austin got to the by-line again two minutes from time and held it superbly before laying it back to the onrushing Martin. He took his shot well but the keeper was again equal to it, as he was Sterling’s effort in injury time as the substitute tried his luck.
